Introduction
It is important to know that the dose of HIV medicines (antiretrovirals or ARV) being used in African patients is the most appropriate. If concentrations of ARVs in the blood are too low, this can result in the development of resistance of the HIV virus to those drugs and this makes them ineffective. Concentrations of ARVs in the blood that are too high result in unwanted side effects. The area of science that studies drugs is pharmacology, and the area of pharmac
ology that studies how different factors affect drug in the body is Pharmacokinetics.
One of the major obstacles to treatment and care in Africa is cost. Although the costs of HIV drugs have come down significanty recently they still remain unaffordable to most Africans with HIV. The area of Pharmacology that studies the cost of drugs and how this impacts on care in Pharmacoeconomics.
Réalta has expertise in Infectious Disease, and more specifically HIV, Pharmacology, and undertakes research in Africa in both HIV pharmacokinetics and pharmacoeconomics. Réalta uses this expertise to evaluate HIV drug safety in African patients, as most previous research has been done in American and European patients who live in different environments, have different diets and customs, and different drug processing genes. It uses pharmacoeconomic expertise to make sure that patients get the best treatment affordable without compromising on efficacy or safety.
