Non-National Doctor Life-Skills Programme

The Réalta Career Management programme is also aimed at doctors from developing countries living or working in Ireland. Working in a foreign system these doctors face considerable challenges entering into the system (negotiating entrance exams, different availability of technologies, different population health priorities) and negotiating the system successfully once they have entered into it. It also gives them an opportunity to meet others in who are having the same experience and offers a forum for exchanging ideas and experiences. The course includes medical CV writing, interview skills, time and career planning and survival skills in the Irish medical environment. It also aims, in the long term, to allow the doctors complete their Irish training more rapidly and return to their home countries to good jobs where they can continue to make a difference. It is hoped that the course will also equip them with skills to negotiate the difficulties that they will face in practice in their own countries when they return.

The Smurfit Business School has recently joined Réalta in the organisation and running of these courses, a collaboration that we believe will further enhance the course.
