The Mpigi Project is a large healthcare programme based in the Mpigi District in Uganda. The project will develop a model of comprehensive HIV/AIDS prevention and care for rural communities in Uganda and other rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa. With greater distances to travel, poorly developed or absent basic infrastructure and very poor communities the deiivery of HIV/AIDS care in rural settings poses an even greater challenge than in an urban setting. In this setting most people live without access to clean water or electricity and, on and average daily earnings of less than one dollar per day, they cannot afford even to travel to the basic healthcare facilities
that extst in the area, let alone the cost of treatment.
Mpigi sub-county is an area of with a population of, located kilometres South-West of Kampala, the capital of Uganda. It is estimated that at lease 10% of te inhabitants of Mpigi are HIV positive and the vast majority of these have no access to life-saving treatments. The Mpigi Project will greatly strengthen local health infrastructure to increase outpatient and laboratory capacity in a number of strategically placed healthcare centres. Along with improving outpatient HIV/AIDS facilities Réalta also intends to provide electricity where necessary, improve sanitation and other clinical facilities including labour wards and ph
armacies. This will include building new clinical facilities, training staff and collaborating with Ugandan Ministry of Health and other funders to bring HIV medicines and prevention programmes to the population of Mpigi. Réalta also aims to provide community outreach programmes in HIV/AIDS prevention and care that will operate from these facilities to reach more isolated communities.
